C) Business of the Company
NTPC has been established to carry out the objectives specified in the Memorandum & Articles of Association of the Company as amended from time to time. The main activities of NTPC are setting up of power plants and power generation through its coal-based and gas-based power plants. The Company has also diversified into construction of hydro power plants and generation of hydro power besides trading and distribution of electricity. The Company is now entering into area of coal mining & coal washries and oil exploration as well. The business portfolio of the company is as under:

Details of Generation
As on December 31, 2005, the installed capacity of the company represented approximately 19.35% (excluding capacities of Badarpur Thermal Power Station managed by NTPC on behlf of GoI) of India's total installed capacity, and contributed 27.1% of the total power generation of India during the April - Dec 2004-05.
NTPC generated a total of 124.207 billion units of electricity during April – Dec, 2005 registering an increase of 6.60% over previous year's generation.
Coal Mining & Washing
NTPC is entering into Coal Mining and Coal Washing in order to ensure fuel security, greater reliability and lower cost of coal supplies for NTPC Stations. One Mine Block namely Pakri Barwadih in the state of Jharkhand has been allotted to NTPC in 2004-05 under Govt. dispensation mode.
Further to the communication of the ‘in-principle’ approval by the GoI to allocate the seven coal blocks to NTPC/ its Joint Venture with Coal India Limited, we have now received the formal approval of Ministry of Coal, Government of India. As per the communication now received.

| iii) |
Talaipalli coal mining block has been allocated for meeting coal requirement for the 4000 MW of power generating capacity as part of Lara integrated coal mine-cum-power subject to the conditions stipulated in the letter. |
Oil Exploration
Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India has conveyed the approval of the Government of India to award an oil block in Arunachal Pradesh, to the consortium of NTPC Limited – Canoro Resources Limited – Geo Petrol International.
Major Fuel resources
Coal
Coal is the main fuel resource for the Company’s power generation as 94.183 billion units (86.30%) out of total generation of 109.135 billion units was through coal-fired plants during the April - Dec 2005.
Gas
Gas is the other fuel resource for the Company’s power generation as 14.953 billion units (13.70%) of total generation of 109.135 billion units was through gas-fired plants.

Joint Venture Companies |

Utility Powertech Limited – a 50:50 Joint Venture Company of NTPC and Reliance Energy Limited has been incorporated to take up assignments of construction, erection and supervision in power sector and other sectors in India and abroad. |

NTPC-Alstom Power Services Private Limited – a 50:50 Joint Venture Company of NTPC and Alstom Power Generation AG, Germany has been incorporated for taking up renovation and modernization assignments of power paints both in India and abroad. |

PTC India Ltd., in which NTPC holds 8% equity, is engaged in the business of purchasing power from power projects and selling the same to SEBS requiring power. |

NTPC-SAIL Power Company Private Limited – a 50:50 Joint Venture of NTPC and SAIL is operating and maintaining the Captive Power Plants (CPP-II) of Durgapur and Rourkela Steel Plants (120 MW each). |
| v) |
Bhilai Electricity Supply Company Private Limited – another 50:50 Joint Venture company of NTPC and SAIL is operating and maintaining the CPP-II (74 MW) of Bhilai Steel Plant. The company is also setting up 2 x 500 MW units as expansion of the CPP. |

NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited – a 50:50 Joint Venture company of NTPC and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been incorporated to establish and operate a 1000 MW thermal power project in Tamil Nadu. |
| vii) |
vii) Ratnagiri Gas and Power Private Limited – a Joint Venture Company which has taken over the assets of Dabhol Power Project from India Lenders. Currently, each of NTPC, GaAIL and Financial Institutions are holding 28.33% equity share capital of the Company and MSEB is holding balance 15%. |
F) Power plant managed by NTPC
Badarpur Thermal Power Station (with a total installed capacity of 705 MW) is being managed by NTPC on behalf of the GoI since April 1978. BTPS supplies its entire generation to Delhi. The station generated 5463 MUs during 2004-05.
